Bleeding Gums: What to Tell Your Dentist

Noticed bleeding gums? Learn what information to share, why a dental assessment matters and which questions to bring to Dr Cos Dentistry in Paphos.
Bleeding gums are a reason to speak to a dentist, especially if the problem continues or you have noticed other changes. Gum problems can be painless at first, so the absence of pain does not explain what is happening.
Describe the pattern rather than guessing the cause
Tell the practice whether bleeding happens when brushing, cleaning between teeth or at other times. Explain how long you have noticed it, whether it affects one area or several and whether there is soreness, swelling or persistent bad breath.
Mention relevant medical information and medicines at your appointment. A symptom can have more than one explanation, and an examination is needed to understand the condition of the gums and supporting tissues.
What might the assessment involve?
The dentist will discuss your concerns and assess your mouth. Ask what the findings mean, whether further records or treatment are needed and how your daily cleaning can be improved. The plan should reflect your own oral health.
Professional dental cleaning can form part of gum care, but the appropriate approach depends on the assessment. A routine clean and treatment for more established gum problems are not necessarily the same plan.
Ask for help with daily cleaning
Bring questions about brushing and cleaning between teeth. Ask the dental team to show you a technique and tools suited to your mouth, including areas around existing restorations. A demonstration can be more useful than simply being told to clean better.
If an area feels uncomfortable to clean, explain that and ask for advice. Let the dentist assess the problem rather than deciding that bleeding is normal for you or assuming that one product will resolve it.
Questions to take to the visit
- What does the assessment show about my gum health?
- Which cleaning changes would be most useful for me?
- Do I need further treatment or a review appointment?
- Which changes should I report before my next planned visit?
When the concern is more urgent
Describe severe or worsening symptoms when contacting the practice so the appropriate next step can be discussed. If you have major swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical help. A website enquiry form is not an emergency service.
